Only reason for my asking, lately I have noticed an increase in SPAM postings by newly approved members. Below is the most recent example?

Obviously Jacob is the expert on this subject, but I do not think there is any approval process as such. You register and you're good to go. That's how I remember my induction.

We discussed a few options for approval during the last spam attack, and IIRC we concluded it was more trouble than it was worth. Jacob is pretty good at "taking out the trash".

Could there be a filter that stopped postings. titled that are URL's
Some people click on them and are right away directed to who knows what?

    Do a "and if" program.

if new and posts URL in title

    user is blocked

    email address is blocked

I was an IT geek pre-retirement and so I could contribute some ideas for an approval process. I could also contribute some ideas on how spammers could defeat those other ideas, and therein lies the rub. Without a human moderator acting as a filter any mousetrap can be defeated by building a better mouse. Spam attacks are definitely annoying, but are innocuous for the most part -- somewhat like The Midnight Skulker in Johny Hart's BC comic strip.

It seems the approval process is automatic. Isabella and her post was submitted 2:02AM. A Google search refelect Isabella has been very busy getting her information out to a number of blogs and forums. Plus the domain is in Nassau, Bahamas.

I defer to your IT background knowledge, just a bit leery when a website is has and out of US domain.

On some sites you have to post a certain amount of times in other threads to be allowed to start you own thread. It seems that Jacob wants this place to be more open to new members, I can see his point , the price is those Spam posts and all the "sock puppets"

Also with that other method spammers just post nonsense until they reach the minimum , so sometimes it is not automatic, some moderator takes a look at the posts to see if they are legit before unlocking the user. Jacob does a lot for us already, that's why I don't complain and just report the spam when I see it to help him out

All the approval stuff should be automatic. I'm not going to go into every little detail here, but there is a lot of filtering that goes on behind the scenes catching well over 90% of the spam before you guys see it, with almost no false-positives. I'm pretty happy with how it is working overall :)
