A few years ago I would try to judge the person picking up the dice and their ability to have a decent roll. One thing I learned, if you are a random player and not a dice influencer, is that anything can happen at any time and you need to always be ready if you want to go out a winner or at worst break even. One day I was at the Texas in Las Vegas (local off-strip joint). The shooter to my left was a very old man who was seated at the table. On the first go around he feebly got up, tossed the dice while using the table to support himself. The dice barely reached the backwall. After establishing a point with great physical difficulty he immediately sevened out. No one was doing all that well around the table, most rolls were in the 4-10 roll range but I decided to brand him a loser and a bad bet. After my turn it went back to the old man. Again he struggled to get up and throw the dice. I decided I would sit out his roll and just watch. After establishing his point he struggled to roll a few times and then hit the point for a winner. There were some Hawaiians at the far end of the table who started out betting with 10 dollars per bet with several place bets and passline bets with 5X odds each time. After watching him hit 3 points and listening to the Hawiians cheer I was compelled to get into the action. I played conservatively expecting he’ll seven out any moment. Needless to say, his roll went on for over another 45 minutes! After a lot of pressing and passline wins the Hawaiians had hundreds placed on every box and had made several thousand dollars each by the end. They tipped the dealers with black chips. I made a sniveling $150 ! After he finished, I turned to the old man and told him I had never experienced a roll like that before, it was awesome. He told me “Yes! This was a wonderful birthday gift. I turned 94 today!”.
After that I decided not to judge anymore by looking at the person or assessing their last roll. You just never know what’s coming next, and now I do a lot better.
