Delaware Park, just south of Wilmington, DE added four craps tables last Friday, June 18th.  I was anxious to try them out so I picked up my son and off we went to throw some bones.  Here’s a brief report on what we found.

We arrived at 11 AM on a Thursday and found just one of the four craps tables open.  It was a $25 minimum and was packed.  We stood and watched as a young guy had a monster roll.  He threw for 45 minutes while we watched and I was told his total time was 1 hour and 20 minutes.  Pretty impressive.  I asked the pit boss if they were going to open any other tables and he said, yes, at noon.  So we decided to wait.

What happened next was a fiasco.  At 12 Noon, the crew sgowed up.  Two dealers, stick and a box man.  Then the tabled filled with shooters and we waited, and waited, and WAITED as the pit boss calipered the dice, counted the chips under the glass, and made numerous trips to who knows where…back and forth, back and forth.  Finally, at !@:35 PM the table officially opened.

The flow was very bad for the first six or seven shootere.  Point - seven out, over and over.  I know.  I was the first to shoot from stick right in the hole and I did nothing.  But the second time I got the dice I made three points before the seven.  My son followed with a 15 minute roll.  His point was five and he never made it.  But in between he threw everything else including nine nines - three of them back to back.  I ended up a small amount for the two hours we played.

My observations are these about this first time at DelPark:

1.  The table minimums are way too high for mid-week players (i.e. One $@% and one $15 while we were there.
2. A lot of the dealers are new to the game (to be expected) but the were friendly and seemed willing to learn.
3. The pit managers need to get their act together (why did he make all of us wait while measuring dice? He could have done that before opening the table)
4. I ran into a surly supervisor at the cage when cashing in my chips.  Five windows - only one opened with a long line.  I complained and she was anything but apologetic which left a very bad impression.

Conclusion:

Since I live just outside Philadelphia, a trip to Atlantic City takes an hour.  To DelPark about 45 minutes.  I would not go back to DELPARK unless they lowered minimums and get better staffing.  As bad as AC can be, at least you can walk to another casino in about 2 minutes.  No so when you’re trapped at a single casino.

Cheers,

It will be interesting to see when the initial burst of enthusiasm dampens, especially with the opening of table games at the Sugar House and elsewhere. That Bally’s AC (Wild West)  move to 100X odds could portend a wave of competition among three states. At least we can hope.
