For dealers, they estimate your position at the table based on how they think other players would fit at the table around you.

From my observations and conversations with dealers I gather dealers use the section of the rail where the player puts his/her chips to determine where to place that player’s chips in the number boxes.

Agreed - this is how many dealers estimate “how other players would fit around” another player.  But you’ll also notice that there are usually more than 8 separated sections in the rail per side - so this is only guideline.

Correct. It’s not where you stand but where your chips are ( normally the same ) that determines your spot on the felt.

Still agree… but I’m sure you’ve seen some players who like to straddle that little divider in the rail with their chips.  Unless there was a threat of inadvertent intermingling of chips between players, I don’t know any dealers that would ask the player to use only one section of the rail so that his bets could be properly positioned in the come boxes.  This is when dealers have to use some common sense and forget about the guideline for positions in the rail.
