Made my first visit today to the Atlantic Club today.  The three dollar game was very active with a very fun crowd and great crew.  But something happened that gave me great pause…..
I placed the four for $10 and it hit.  I said “buy it for $25.”  The took out the vig - $1.25!  The dealer gave me the change which included a 25 cent chip and a 50 cent chip.
Has anyone seen this before?....not the quarter and half dollar chips, but the weird vig of $1.25???

Why is that weird?  $1.25 is 5% of $25.

I guess I have always seen the vig rounded to the nearest dollar.  I think I have played craps in 20 casinos and have never seen this before.  Maybe it is just me.

I agree, but the weird part is having not only $0.50 cheques, but also $0.25 cheques.  You asked:

If the table has the capacity to do so, the casino will charge you the proper 5% vig.  I’d be interested to know if this casino allows players to make bets with those $0.25 cheques - $13.50 Place bet on the 6/8, for example.

Ahhhh the good old days when the Horseshoe, pre CET, would pay $14.50 for a 5/9, and $19.50 for the 4/10.

Sir Kay, I love your signature, it’s a classic!

It’s good to be reminded.

Without the $0.50 and $0.25 chips I would guess the house would charge only $1 vig. Now that they have those new chips they can get the true percentages and make change without using the coin of the realm.

I was in the Atlantic Club yesterday. Minimum place bet is $2.50 meaning you can place the 6 & 8 for $3, the 5, 9, 4, & 10 for $2.50. You get paid the same odds as before
but with the new $0.50 and $0.25 chips as needed.
I may play there more often when the bankroll is low.

I think its a complete disgrace to the game to be even playing for dollars and 1.25, and 2.50 bets.  I voice my complaints to the floor manager and let him know I would be taking my real action to a finer establishment.  Offering these low mins just attracts a crowd of degenerates and actually is preying on the poor by scooping up all the dollar bills they have to there name and in turn the casino has no real risk of getting beaten because the max that limit player has behind is around 30 bucks max.  Completely disgraceful and should be banned by law.

Interesting point of view.  I do not agree, however.

The Atlantic Club is advertised as what it is - a casino targetting a different market.  The people around the table when I was there was a fun mix of players.  I did not get the impression any of them were betting with their food stamp money. In talking with many of them, it seems a lot were regulars who could afford to come down three or four times a week and play for a couple of hours a day, instead of maybe one trip a week or less burning throught heir buy-in in a half an hour .The crew also was very good and, since they knew so many of the regulars, made the game quite fun. “Normal minimum” games ($5, $10, $15) attract their share of low end players as well….we all have seen players come up to $10 table with a handful of singles, take a $10 chip and put it on the field or on a hard 6.

Feel free to play at the $25 tables at your high end casino and keep your elitist judgments away from us degenerates who go to the tables for entertainment.

I agree, JHPA. When I was there people were betting $5 and $10 with big odds. There also were $3 bettors who did not look like paupers.
The low limit attracts new players who don’t want to risk a lot while learning the game.
I don’t understand people who want to bet big but don’t like the low limit tables because of the type of people they attract.

One of my 25 commandments is ....always play at the lowest minimum bet table available.

I want the ability to bet down and I can always bet high, if I want to.

I disagree completely.

A low limit game is great for new players that don’t want to throw a ton of money on the table when they’re learning.  If they want to bet more; they’re free to.  If you don’t want to play with a bunch of low limit degenerates; don’t. Look for that high limit “real action” table that’s empty and boring.

A crowd of degenerates?  What like a crowd of gamblers? Or worse?

Preying on the poor? I’ve never seen anyone throwing dice in a casino with a gun held to their head.  Craps tables make people degenerates like spoons made Rosie ODonnell fat.  More laws is what we need; more goverment telling me how I should or should not spend my money. Don’t forget, if the goverment tells you the minimum you can gamble they’ll tell you the maximum too.
